GenS Gender Studies Week

CALL FOR ABSTRACT

Thirty years have passed since the Fourth World Conference on Women and the global adoption of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action for Gender Equality. In 1995 the representatives of 189 governments, United Nations agencies, intergovernmental organizations such as the European Union and League of Arab States, as well as activists and organizations from across the world, attended what has been hailed as one of the most significant symposiums to date in the struggle for gender In fact, through the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action for Gender Equality the international community ratified its commitment to address civil, political, social, economic and cultural inequalities, also by affirming that women’s rights are human rights and that equality between genders benefits everyone. Nevertheless, after 30 years from “Beijing 1995”, discrimination, prejudice, and violence still shape the living conditions of millions of women who find themselves in a disadvantaged position in terms of access to political and economic power. Those power asymmetries endanger human rights, expose women to gender violence, embed social exclusion and poverty, and hinder the achievement of full autonomy for half of the world’s population.

Starting from these premises, the 3rd edition of the GenS Conference aims to analyze, from a sociological perspective, the status of gender relations in their different aspects, modalities and outcomes by welcoming papers that deal with:
– Gender equality
– Gender roles and imaginary
– Gendered social representations
– Gender socialization and gender-sensitive education
– Gender-based violence and victim blaming
– Gender stereotypes and prejudices
– Women and politics
– Women in the public sphere
– Women’s leadership
– Gender and media
– Gender gap and glass ceiling
– Gender and intersectionality
– Gender and knowledge production
